Positive Thinking

The main problem with the “power of positive thinking” movement is that it sees positive thinking as the means rather than the result, just as medicine sees getting rid of symptoms as the means to health rather than the result.

Can it not be both a method and an outcome, such as goal setting or prayer? An OIBU method and a ADIO outcome. Do you visualize a normalizing in force transmission with the adjustment?

    • JStraussDC 12/21/2011, 9:35 pm:

Steve, are you asking whether it can be a cause and effect at the same time? I may think about the fact that I am normalizing innate force transmission when I give an adjustment. But at the same time I realize that it is the ii of the PMs body making the adjustment and that the uf I introduce is only that, a uf. Visualizing does not add to the adjustment. In fact if it distracts me from focusing on my contact, line of drive, amount of force I am introducing, etc., I believe it would be doing more harm than good. An OI mthod creates an OI effect…and that is not necessarily always bad.

      • Steve 12/23/2011, 2:38 pm:

So your saying you can do the right thing for the wrong reason and it will still turn out ok? If someone was to adjust a subluxation merely because they like to hear the bones “pop” or adjust to reduce symptoms, or worse yet just do it for the money, as long as they introduce the right force, in the right place, at the right time, there is no difference????

        • Claude Lessard 12/23/2011, 8:00 pm:

NO! NO! NO! We practice the objective of chiropractic which is the location, analysis and correction of vertebral subluxations for a full expression of the innate intelligence of the body. Period.

The fact remains that a universal force with always be WHAT it is! When a universal force is adapted by the innate intelligence of the body, the very character of this same universal force is transformed into an innate force and that’s when the adjustment occurs. It is the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member making the adjustment at the right place and at the right time,

It is possible to introduce a universal force on the wrong side, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and the innate intelligence will make the adjustment 10 hours and 3 minutes and 15 seconds later at the right place. Reverse is true. The chiropractor may introduce a universal force at the right place, at the right time, on the appropriate side, the innate intelligence may NOT use this particular force. WHY?

OIBU will ALWAYS create OIBU effect. It is the intent of the WHO using the outside-in method that is relevant. If the intent of the WHO is to introduce a universal force SPECIFIC into the spine for the objective of LACVS for a full expression of the body, then, WHO is practicing chiropractic!

          • Claudelessard@comcast.net 12/23/2011, 10:40 pm:

An OSC, WHO is practicing chiropractic with the intent to work with the INNATE INTELLIGENCE IN THE BODY OF THE PRACTICE MEMBER so that the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member uses the SPECIFIC (LACVS for a full expression of the innate intelligence of the body) universal force (that the OSC WHO introduced it into the spine) and transforms it into an innate force at whatever place and whatever time to make an adjustment. Then, the OSC WHO let go of everything is vindicated by the philosophy of chiropractic and freed from herself. 🙂

That’s an important comment Steve. Since the ii of the body ultimately is what makes the adjustment and it does not care where the uf it needs comes from, yes, a right thing can result from a wrong intent. The chiropractic profession is fortunate in that regard, for I believe that the vast majority of adjustments given since 1895 were for the wrong reason, perhaps the ones that you suggested. The adjustment done by the ii of the PMs body has an intrinsic value to it. Innate intelligence being perfect, the adjustment is perfect even though the uf may be less than perfect. But that said, I think our intent is also important. That is how we judge whether it is OSC or not. So in a sense, a right thing (adj.) may occur with the wrong intent (pop, symptoms, money).

          • Steve 12/26/2011, 4:13 pm:

So the intent can make us feel good about ourselves (what we do and why we do it) but has little to no value for the patient ? In a previous post, I believe you stated “specific chiropractic” was pertaining to intent not technique. If this is indeed your position I ask you, why adjust multiple levels in one visit, why focus on a segment or listing at all? If a uf is a uf is a uf, of what importance is analysis and listings and what about non-force techniques?

          • JStraussDC 12/26/2011, 6:31 pm:

The intent has no value in the quality or the character of the adjustment because it is the ii of the body changing the character of the uf. Of course your intent is importand in educating the PM as to your objective. It is true that a uf is a uf but, the more intelligent that uf is introduced, the greater chance the ii will have to adapt it for use within the body.

I read long ago that Norman Vincent Peale was advised by his publishers not to use the term he wanted to use for his most famous book (The Power of Positive Thinking) because it would not “sell.” So he used “positive thinking” instead of “faith.” If it is true that “faith precedes the miracle,” then the miracle/symptomatic relief (the result) apparently comes after faith/positive thinking (the means). But as Steve says, it could be both! Just my two cents worth.

    • JStraussDC 12/21/2011, 10:25 pm:

First, welcome to the blog, GR! Your “two cents” are always welcome. Interesting anecdote about Peale. I think sometimes with “positive thinking”, and even faith and prayer we ignore the fact that those things are not in and of themselves the answer. It is the object of that faith, prayer or positive thinking that is important and that the object of that faith is worthy. Faith is not keeping me sitting at this computer. It is faith in the chair beneath me and it being worthy of that faith. Experience (empiricism) has demonstrated that my faith was not misplaced. If all that was needed was faith or positive thinking, I would not even need the chair. A “chiropractic miracle” only necessitates the faith it takes to lie down on the chiropractic table. After that it is natural laws.

A universal force is a universal force. No more, no less. The OSC will use her educated intelligence to locate and analyse the vertebral subluxation, then, select a chiropractic technique (HIO, Gonstead, Activator, etc) to introduce a universal force into the spine of the practice member. WHY?

It is the intent of the OSC to work with the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member, so that the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member adapts the universal force that was introduced into the practice member’s spine and transform it into an innate force.

IF the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member uses the universal force introduced by the OSC and transforms its character into an innate force, then, and ONLY then, does a SPECIFIC adjustment performed by the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member occur.

IF the innate intelligence of the body of the practice member does NOT use the universal force introduced by the OSC, there will be no transformation of the character of the universal force and the adjustment will NOT occur. Now tell me, WHERE is the SPECIFIC in the location, analysis and listing of the VS that the OSC performed with her educated intelligence if the adjustment does not occur?

  4. Claudelessard@comcast.net 12/27/2011, 4:32 pm:

Specific chiropractic is NOT only about intent. Chiropractic maintains that life INTERNAL energy at work in matter. Matter cannot possess motion without internal force to move it. Force which moves human matter comes from WITHIN the human being. When force WITHIN cannot reach the matter, then matter slows down or speed up in its rate of functional activity and DIS-EASE is present. DIS-EASE is of a simple and SPECIFIC CAUSE due to interference with transmission within the body which is always directly or indirectly due to subluxation located within the spinal column (prin.31), slowing down or speeding up the functional rate of motion of matter.

Vertebral subluxation produces pressure upon the nerves which convey innate forces (mental impulses) from the brain to the tissue cell and vice-versa. This pressure upon nerves causes the character of the innate force to reverses to its original state of universal force thereby “destroying” (prin.26) the normal quality of the mental impulse creating DIS-EASE within the WHOLE body.

Human performance has adaptive features for people and works as a functional wholeness. For example, if the liver slows down or speed up its activity WITHOUT proper coordination, it upsets other chemical balances to which it played an important part. At this point, adaptive symptoms develop to compensate for the malfunction of the liver (it could be any organs, systems or cells of the body in this example). Here comes SPECIFIC:

There is ONLY ONE DIS-EASE regardless of organic systems, character of malfunction or any combination there of in one or more tissue cells. The OSC acknowledges ONE dis-ease, ONE cause, ONE source, ONE solution which is the chiropractic adjustment, restoring the character of the ONE force, from ONE source, through ONE nerve system (princ.28), bringing about the principle of harmonious action of ALL the parts of the body (princ.32).

WHATEVER existed abnormally and unnaturally, will sooner or later, be restored to normal functional speed of action and HUMAN PERFORMANCE is the ultimate and unequivocal requisite.

    – ONE DIS-EASE (abnormal rate of functional activity in matter)
    – ONE CAUSE (Vertebral subluxation in matter)
    – ONE SOLUTION (chiropractic adjustment in matter)

    Amazing isn’t it?

    • Steve 12/28/2011, 3:05 pm:

Hey Claude, I like the way you have changed “one cure” to “one solution”. Cure relates too much to disease. Solution is to treatment what analysis is to diagnosis, more comprehensive. So tell me what is your interpretation of “the adjustment with something extra” as BJ put it?

      • Claudelessard@comcast.net 12/28/2011, 10:54 pm:

You want me to give you my interpretation of “the adjustment with something extra” as BJ put it.

When BJ said “the adjustment WITH THAT EXTRA SOMETHING”, it is my understanding that BJ meant that the adjustment, “WITH THAT EXTRA SOMETHING”, was to be able to UNTORQUE THE TORQUED SUBLUXATION at a time when it IS a subluxation, NOT at a time when it is NOT a subluxation… where there IS interference present and NOT where it is absent. BJ also said that if this is done, the adjustment will have “staying put value”. BJ wrote 870 pages on this subject in his green book “THE SUBLUXATION SPECIFIC–THE ADJUSTMENT SPECIFIC”, PALMER, 1934.

The Objective Straight Chiropractor KNOWS there IS an innate intelligence, whose function is to adapt universal forces and matter for use in the body so that all parts of the body will have coordinated action for mutual benefit (pri.23), within every person. The OSC also KNOWS that this innate intelligence principle is responsible for the constructing of that body and its multitudes of functions… that this innate intelligence is present in every cell of the body that compose each organ and systems. The OSC also KNOWS that there is an innate awareness for every innate need.(pri.32) and that coordination is the principle of harmonious action of all the parts of the body in fulfilling their purpose. In short the OSC has this INNER conviction that the innate principle IS the ALL with regard to organic life.

An OSC desires to work with the innate intelligence of the practice member that this innate intelligence in the practice member might make the ONLY SPECIFIC adjustment necessary for the correction of the vertebral subluxations in the practice member. This will occur when the OSC will locate and analyse the vertebral subluxation, then choose the technique of her choice (HIO, Gonstead, Activator, etc…) and introduce a universal force into the spine of the practice member with this unshakable INNER CONVICTION (extra something) with the INTENT that the innate intelligence of the body will adapt this universal force introduced by the OSC and transform it into an innate force for correcting the vertebra to ITS ABSOLUTE NORMAL POSITION.

We must always remember that it is impossible to “see” a vertebral subluxation since its metaphysical component is beyond the realm of the human senses. I AM CONVINCED that the innate intelligence of the body “knows” the ONE definite, exact and certain position for every articular facet of that vertebra which is subluxated and that this innate intelligence of the body “knows” there is ONE definite, exact and certain ABSOLUTE NORMAL position where that vertebra must eventually be restored and and that this innate principle will restore it with ABSOLUTE SPECIFIC correction within the limitation of matter and time. I AM CONVINCED that I am inferior to the greatness of the mission of the innate intelligence principle which is to maintain the material of the body of a “living thing” in active organization (pri.21).

To know and hold these two opposites within myself while I practice chiropractic is “to give an adjustment WITH THAT EXTRA SOMETHING”!

        • Steve 12/30/2011, 2:05 pm:

So, “that extra something” is physical and nonphysical. I had heard/read it both ways as well. THANX Chiropractic is a beautiful thing!
Here’s to learning more in 2012, HAPPY NEW YEAR

          • JStraussDC 12/30/2011, 2:26 pm:

My thoughts Steve: Since the adjustment is done by the ii of the body, it is always perfect, 100% and cannot have anything “extra” to it (you cannot improve upon perfection). So the only thing that BJ could be referring to is the quality, character (physical)and intent (metaphysical) of the universal force that the chiropractor is introducing to the PM’s spine.
